  • Are donations tax deductible? Will I receive a tax deduction statement?
Yes, your donation is tax deductible. Tax donation letters for monetary gifts are mailed each time a donation is made as well as cumulative end-of-year statements. Receipts for in-kind donations like food are available on request. Please contact our office at (336) 547-7000 or email us for any questions regarding this or any other financial matters.
  • Other than donating food, how can I get involved?
With food insecurity increasing this past year, we have expanded our giving programs so everyone can make an impact. See our Give page including our Walmart Registry and our Monthly Giving Program. In addition, we always need volunteers to help pick up food and take it directly to our food bank and pantry partners.
  • I have more questions. Who can I contact?
Email ASG and we'll happily answer your questions.
  • What is the Green Bag Food Program and how does it work?
Individual food donors sign up for a reusable green donation bag to fill with nonperishable food items. Donors may sign up for monthly or every other month pick-ups. Once you have signed up, we will bring you a reusable green donation bag for you to fill with needed canned, boxed and bagged food items. The bag will come with a tag that provides Saturday pick-up dates and a list of needed food. We will send a reminder email a few days before we pick up the bag. On the scheduled pick up date, donors place their filled green bag outside their door. Volunteers will come by to pick up the filled green bag and leave a new one to fill for the next pick up.
  • What happens if my bag doesn't get picked up or I forget to leave it outside?
A Simple Gesture has a food donation bin located outside of our garage at 3503 Redington Drive. You are welcome to drop your donated food in the food donation bin and pick up a replacement bag from the green bag bin. If you need assistance or someone to pick up your bag, please email asimplegesturegso@gmail.com
  • What kind of food can I put in my Green Bag?
  • What are the Green Bag pick up dates?
Your schedule is based on the color of the tag on your Green Bag:

Maria is the Director of Green Bag Food Recovery Program. Email her .and she will gladly answer your questions.
  • How do I begin the process of donating food?
Any business, school, event, etc. with any type of edible surplus food can donate (no donation is too small or large). Contact Laura and we will match the food to one of our over 35 vetted nonprofit agencies in Guilford County. A rescuer will pick-up and drop-off the food. It’s that simple!
  • What type of food can I donate?
We accept edible perishable and nonperishable food.
  • Is it safe to donate perishable food in NC?
Yes! The North Carolina Standard Operating Procedures for donors can be found by clicking HERE. The Food Donation Improvement Act of 2022 and the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act of 1996 state that donors are protected from any civil or criminal liability when donating food in good faith to a nonprofit agency. These laws, supported by the USDA and EPA, were created to support and encourage the donation of food and groceries. Donors only need to maintain food safety requirements per NC State regulations until the time of donating the food. Afterwards, ASG will take care of preservation and distribution of the food donations in a timely, safe manner.
  • Is A Simple Gesture a Feeding America and Second Harvest partner?
Yes! We proudly collaborate to complete deliveries efficiently and with the greatest impact.

  • What is the SHARE Program?
Our SHARE Program is our food recovery program within the schools. In 2023, ASG placed refrigerators in all 126 Guilford County Schools and one charter school to not only reduce wasted food, but also to offer additional nutrition to any student who needs it. Students donate unopened, unwrapped food items (milk, juice, bags of veggies, etc) from the school nutrition department to the SHARE fridge. Any student can then grab the extra food from the fridge anytime throughout the day. Sharing food, not wasting it.
  • What are the benefits of the SHARE Program?
Makes use of our food resources to their fullest. Easy for students and staff to implement and utilize. The food is available to any student in the school, thereby eliminating stigma. Teachers and healthcare workers can offer extra nourishment to students and, in turn, decrease the need to purchase from their personal finances. Allows implementation of North Carolina state curriculum standards of minimizing unnecessary food waste and maximizing valuable food resources.
  • I have questions about the SHARE Program. Who do I contact?
Julia is the Director of our SHARE Program. Email her with your questions, and she'll be happy to respond.
